Post-Op Instructions

These are general instructions and not all of these instructions may apply to your recovery. Common sense will often dictate what you should do; however, when in doubt, follow these guidelines or call our office at any time for clarification.

For 24 hours following surgery Do not smoke or rinse. If desired, the day after surgery rinse mouth gently every 3 to 4 house (especially after meals) using ¼ teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. You may continue rinses for several days.
Following extractions, some bleeding is to be expected. If persistent bleeding occurs, place a slightly moistened gauze over the bleeding area and bite firmly for ½ hour. If bleeding continues, place a slightly moistened tea bag on the surgical area for approximately 20 minutes.
If recommended, an ice pack should be applied immediately to the operated area in 30-minute intervals on and off for 4 to 5 hours. A bag of frozen vegetables works nicely as a substitute.
We have found non-prescription medications such as aspirin, Tylenol®, Advil®, Motrin®, and the like to be quite effective.

Please try these first if you are not allergic to them. Codeine will be prescribed when necessary.

If antibiotics have been recommended, please take them as instructed.
A light diet is advisable during the first 24 hours.

Soft foods are preferred; avoid tough and crunchy foods.
Small fragments may work through the gums during healing. If annoying, call Bonnie & Simone so we may schedule a quick appointment for their simple removal.
If any unusual symptoms occur, please call Bonnie & Simone at (757) 540-1028 immediately. The proper care following oral surgical procedures will speed recovery and prevent complications.
